Based in Hawarden North Canterbury, The Christophersen family currently rear 3000 brown shavers producing The first Free Range Omega-3 Eggs in New Zealand.
Timo and Jonna orignate from Germany and have lived in New Zealand for the last 17 years and now reside in Hawarden with their two children Lewis and Pippa. English is their second language and they are proud to call the Hurunui home.
On their 105 ha farm, The Christophersen family produce free range eggs, sheep and beef and have now opened a butchery shop in Woodend.
In 2018, Timo built their first mobile chicken shed that catered for 200 hens – Jonna said;
“it felt like he was building the ark, spending every spare minute on this new project right in the middle of calving!”
They eventually started to sell their eggs at their roadside stall and to local restaurants and cafes in Hurunui. They really enjoyed marketing our own eggs and the interaction with our community. After having received positive feedback for their eggs, Timo and Jonna decided to buy two additional small portable sheds that held a further 200 hens each and started on their egg journey – Hurunui Omegga was born.
Today they have a large portable shed from Holland to add a further 3,000 hens. It works on hydrolysis and can be moved around the paddock to ensure the hens always have access to fresh grass and are truly free-range!
Hurunui Omegga have five times as much Omega 3 as the average egg and match the Omega 3 in a tin of tuna per gram.

Why North Canterbury? We love the area, with its nice community in Amuri and Hawarden. Culverden has become and extended family, especially since our own family are in Germany. The good farming climate suits both our lifestyle and work.
Favourite thing to do? North Canterbury offers everything on your doorstep. From skiing, which is just a 40-minute drive to Mt Lyford, to beach swimming, hunting, and fishing, it’s a gateway to the outdoors and great for the kids.
