Terrace Edge is an organic family vineyard overlooking the Waipara River in North Canterbury. Purchased by the Chapman family in 1999, the property was originally a sheep farm before land conversion began the following year and 2000 olive trees were planted on the lower terrace. Much like the growing of excellent wine, the development of Terrace Edge itself required a hands-on approach and the entire Chapman family has been involved in every aspect of the business.
Visitors come from near and far to sample the award-winning varietals and to stock up on Terrace Edge’s own olives and pressed olive oils. They’ve recently added gourmet toasties to their offering, tempting guests to stick around even longer. We’re partial to the braised beef and sticky pork, which are both served on fresh ciabatta bread.
There’s plenty of seating both inside and out, so whether you choose to soak in the sunshine or nestle indoors, it’s certainly not hard – or a bad idea – to lose track of time at Terrace Edge. An elegant yet pared-back winery experience with views of the rolling North Canterbury hills and row upon row of grapevines, Terrace Edge is the kind of place where wine lovers and foodies alike can easily spend an entire afternoon. Stop by for a tasting, indulge in the wine and food experience, which includes thoughtfully prepared creations matched with five wines (bookings are essential) and make sure you stock up on some olive oil and wine before heading on your way.
If you can’t make it to their cellar door, then you’re in luck! Terrace Edge offers free, nation-wide shipping on orders over $100. You can visit their online store here.
Why North Canterbury? North Canterbury has a number of smaller family producers doing exciting things, I love how we are a tight knit group supporting each other to keep doing what we love.
What’s your favourite thing to do in North Canterbury? There is not many things I love more than getting out on my ride on mower (which I got for my birthday) and cutting the grass around the tasting room. Sad, but true – so satisfying
Name your top three North Canterbury brands (other than your own!). This is like choosing bridesmaids for a wedding! There might be tears – so I will just pick one. I can’t go past our friends doing great things down the road – The Bone Line.
