It’s a fact: North Cantabrians love their fresh fish. Shayne Garbes knows this better than anyone. The fifth-generation fisherman has been catching and selling fish for decades, originally via his Kaikōura-based delivery truck, before branching out into farmers’ markets.
It was at one such market that he met Janine Rogers – a customer who would become a partner in life and business. When Shayne wanted a change from his delivery service offering, the couple pooled their knowledge and experience and opened North Canterbury Seafood Market in Rangiora.
Since opening in 2009 the couple – who live coastally – have been purchasing fresh fish at the daily Christchurch fish market and selling direct to their loyal customers. Local, sustainably caught seafood is of utmost importance to the pair.
“We are local people, running a local business, employing local staff and selling fish caught locally,” explains Janine. You see the theme.
“Our philosophy is to select fish from local suppliers to ensure best quality, sustainable fish stocks and to reduce food miles. Caring for our local customers and for our ocean environment is a total no-brainer and a long-term investment.”
As well as whole and filleted fish – which can include Gurnard, Tarakihi, Akaroa Cod, Monkfish, Warehou, Seaperch, Moki, Akaroa Salmon and other varieties depending on the day’s catch – the shop’s deli section offers a freshly made selection of delicious fish and seafood meals including seafood chowder, fishcakes, fish pies, fritters and curries. There are sauces and marinades available to compliment fish purchases as well as an abundance of recipe ideas for those looking for a new culinary adventure.
“Cooking fish is easy, but a lot of people are unsure about it,” says Janine. “By providing recipes, advice and accompaniments we aim to help our customers get the most out of their fish and to reap the benefits of eating locally sourced fresh seafood.”
In addition to their loyal shop customers, the couple sell wholesale to local restaurants and cafes. “This is a vital part of our business and one we are always looking to grow,” say Janine.
North Canterbury Seafood Market is located at 2 High Street in Rangiora. They also sell fish as available at the Ohoka Farmers Market on Fridays and Amberley Farmers Market on Saturdays.
